This is my final assignment for the very recommendable environment workshop with Phil Straub.

Some short info about the image.
I tried to establish an epic scene containing some fantasy touches mixed up with sci-fi elements. As big fan of of Coles and Bierstadts artworks I wanted to add a similar look.

For this image I mainly tried to establish a classic painting look. As regards the textures I was influenced by Arnold Böcklins "Isle of death". I allways loved the consistency of the rocks within this image and the color variation of the clouds. I had the chance to study the original painting in Berlin in february.

The focus on this image is lightning, depth and atmosphere.


content/idea: A fleet of big spaceships docking on a planet without touching the ground for lunch break. The people are moving out with their cruisers breathing some fresh and returning back after a couple of hours.

The idea was to create an alien horse tamed by replacing the original horns with mechanical devices.

I started the image with a scanned pencil sketch of the horse head. The horseman and the open range environment I created completly within the digital painting process.
